With NaNoWriMo, my ghost writing job, and a series of literary events and opportunities that have come my way, this has become a month solely dedicated to writing. I don’t know how I feel about that yet.
This was the first full week of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), and as promised, I will be doing weekly updates. For the first week, I did well! I’ve followed most of what I planned in my preparation post last month, including scheduling writing time and reducing distractions. I hit 12,353 words by Day 7, which put me ahead of schedule but also put me in a bind. At a little less than quarter of my word count goal I managed to complete my novel…er, novella. I’m shifting gears and am aiming to hit my word count by writing one or two longer companion pieces that could work together with it in a collection. I’ve been spending longer than I’d like outlining these, so it’ll be tough now for me to catch up!
It’s also tough because this is the busiest time of year for my ghost writing clients. When I’m not writing for fun, I’m writing for work. When I’m somehow not doing either, I’m either sleeping or avoiding anything that has to do with looking at the computer. I’ve been cleaning and organizing way too much lately – which is a productive form of procrastination, but procrastination nonetheless.
Balancing self-care and my responsibilities has always been a struggle for me. I always do too much of one or the other, which usually results in burnout or intense anxiety. While I scheduled writing times for this month, I did not schedule any breaks. While taking breaks, I feel guilty and stressed because there are grant and residency applications (that could really help my creative development) with looming deadlines.
I’m not sure how I’m going to cope with this, but I hope I can reduce my likelihood of burnout and still get as much done as possible. I guess I’ll find out by the end of the month. 🙂
